Hi everyone , I have never kept chickens before and have just started to gather materials for my hen house . So , my first question is, what kind of hens/chickens do I start with . Secondly , am I best having a run that has grass/soil bare beneath it .
Please tell me everything you think I need to know as I know nothing of this . Please help . Thank you . Pete

What kind of chickens you get would depend on what you want chickens for; eggs, meat, pets, or a bit of all three; and how much space you have for them. Bantams will only require a small coop, while a flock of Brahmas will need a substantially larger space. It's also a good idea to factor in weather conditions. Some breeds do well in cooler climates, others are better suited to warm climates.

Nice to meet you Pete. It would take ages for us to tell you everything you need to know about chickens & you would forget most of it. You can take the fast track and head for the Learning Center and also "Raising Backyard Chickens," forum above. If you forget something you've read, it is already in print for you to go back and remind yourself.

What purpose do you expect chickens to fill: layers, meat birds, pets, lawn decorations, etc. That would narrow it down for us. What type of climate do you live in? Any pets in the home or young children? Are you wanting young chicks, or grown birds? Please help us, help you.

If you go to "where am I, where are you?" in the social forum, you can locate and post on your state thread. You may find you have chicken folks living near you that could give the best answers on what breed does well in your climate, what type of coop is needed to get chickens through your seasons. Where is the best place to get birds in your area an, best feed stores etc.

We just can't know that ourselves - BYC has over 330,000 members around the globe. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

glad you have joined us.

There's so much information on this site, but sounds like you need to start at the beginning:

First make sure you do want them. Here's a great article to give you an over view: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/the-pros-and-cons-of-raising-chickens

Hopefully you will decide they fit in with your expectations and resources.

Next read all the getting started articles in the learning center.

Visit the coop/run forums, there's so many examples and discussions to help you decide what you can accomplish.

Once you have a definite plan to move foreword, then start studying the breeds.

Good luck with all.
