I was thinking I would hammer in a 2x2 corner stake at each corner of the coop, then hammer some 1/2" plywood about 3-4" into the ground and screw it to the corner posts. Would that be deep enough to avoid digging? The coop will be located in an already fenced in area of our yard - fenced with post/rail and 2x4 welded wire- but it has a 2" gap at between the bottom and the ground to save me from burning a spool of trimmer wire with every lawn cutting.

Is 2" gap, coupled with less than sturdy welded wire fencing going to be much more than a turnstile for a hungry/curious fox?

Is 3-4" deep enough to bury plywood?

We have no intentions of free ranging when my wife or kids or Golden Retriever are not in the yard. At least not in the early going. There are also a few structures (deck, playhouse, swingset, hammock) that make the fenced yard a less than ideal spot for a swoop in and out attack. Will a hawk or owl still go at a hen if there's no quick in and out? Do they prefer to carry off the catch or kill and eat right on the spot. I can't imagine my kids (or wife) would do too well with that. Wasps and mud daubers are bad enough... I can't have my 2 year old come in screaming every time a bird flies by
