I haven't gotten any chickens yet; hoping to do a LOT of research about them before getting any. I want a nice mix of breeds and egg colors for my flock... looking into Easter Eggers (which I learned aren't actually a registered breed) for unique eggs. My parents are open to the idea of chickens, as long as I am totally prepared for them. I live near San Fransisco, CA... so no need to prepare for harsh weather... it's always pretty mild. I'm probably going to be asking a lot of questions... are there any informative books you guys recommend? Thank you.

I'd love to fill the backyard with ducks, quails, geese, turkeys, peacocks, pheasants, emu, etc...

I must own a ranch someday.

Welcome to BYC! This site has an amazing amount of information! I just got my first chickens last spring. They were a gift (have wanted to have chickens for years but never thought I would actually have them). I wasn't really prepared, but learned FAST!!! I have never had so much fun! The weather has been very cold but everyone appears to be doing fine. I have 6 easter eggers, I an getting both green and blue eggs. I hope to get a few brown layers next spring.
