Hi there. I have been reading all the forums for the past few weeks and with all of your help have been able to tell my husband what type of chickens we have and may have identified a possible rooster in our little flock of 6. This is a very new experience to me. I have been terrified of birds my whole life and yesterday I actually almost touched one of them to help it along to the coop. (I know if sounds silly, but for me I have come a long way.) and reading the information you all have put in the forums is what has helped me start to overcome the fear I have with them. We got our White Leghorn chicks in April and they were around 8 - 12 weeks. They are becoming very beautiful and I am watching them to see what kind of attitudes they have so I can pick out some names but I am having a problem telling them apart they all look alike to me. Do you think as they get older I will be able to tell them apart better. I was thinking maybe putting a little tag on their ankles (?) would help. I am also working on telling if we do have any roosters in our flock. I hope so. And I hope he is as pretty as all of yours are. I will post pics later and hope that you can all help me id if he/she is a pullet or roo.

Happy Chatting and thanks for all the help:D

Hi SassyT!

It's good to hear that you are overcoming your fear of birds. If you sit on a chair very quietly in their coop, some may jump up on your lap to snuggle. That's what won me over.

I have trouble telling young chickens apart. They lose feathers and look different each day. You could take some water-soluble markers and dab a different colored dot on the back of each one.

from MN! You will be able to tell them apart when they get older. here's a pic of young leghorn pullets and the same pullets when they're older.

from UT! The main reason I didn't want chickens is because I was petrified of them. Now I can't imagine life before them. They love to climb in my lap and be carried around. Sounds like you had a pretty big break through, good luck - you'll find that they are pretty amazing once you get to know them.

We had difficulty telling some apart when they were younger, as they age they start looking different and their personalities emerge as well.

Thanks for the pics I am sure we have a flock of ladies. And I thought they were around 6 months but I have been informed by my dh that they are not yet 5 months. OOPS...

from Michigan. I can only tell 3 of mine apart. They are the only ones so far that have names. I was thinking of the leg bands or something too.
