Will the doxycycline prevent infection from the puncture?

You'll want to swab it well with alcohol. That and the doxy she should be fine. Do let the alcohol dry before the stick, or it makes it sting. Good luck.

Thanks. If I can’t drain her, I may take her in to an avian vet this week. I am starting to realize that this might end with me having her put down. I can’t let her suffer. I’ll keep you posted.

18 gauge was the biggest. On my way home to try this. The feed store chicken lady recommended I don’t even attach a syringe, Which I was thinking of, anyway.

Well that was a fail. First poke, she flinched and the needle dropped before it even really went in. Second poke definitely went in, but no fluid came out. I did not attach, nor pull with, the syringe. I just feel like the needle would be moving around inside too much. When the vet did this, there was tubing lure locked to the needle and the syringe. I have one needle left and some coming from Amazon.

It’s possible it’s just a giant mass or something in there. Or maybe there’s so much fat, I can’t get to the fluid (though Ruby is very picky and the only treats she ever liked were sunflower seeds, which she got when she was sick last year, and chopped kale.) Sigh. My poor girl.

OMG, there are a couple drops of blood where Ruby was standing. When the avian vet tried to tap her, Ruby bled then, too. She’s waddling around the yard foraging on greens, and when I run my hand along the area where I think I poked, there is no blood.

Tough decisions.
I don't think I would like poke her anymore. I'm too worried about making it/her worse by introducing more bacteria.
