Towels for bedding. Can I put them in the washing machine?

I shook out all the poop but of course there's tons of dust and poop residue. Is it OK to wash these things in the washing machine? Or should I just toss them.

Wash them in hot water, detergent, and add something like borax if you have it. Let them pre-soak for an hour or so, too. It's how we used to wash cloth diapers...
