I have a momma chicken, year old, running with her first batch of babies. When she poops, it is unreal- green and smells like it came from a dark dark place. I’m not feeding her anything other than her own feed and that of her chicks. She has been out on the yard, but she is creating these catastrophic craps even when not outside. My gut says she is holding it in, but I can’t tell. She has no other symptoms and there is no visible blood in the poop.

Thoughts?

She could still be in the phase of "broody poo."

When a hen broods, she does hold it in, for about 24 hours, going off the nest once per day for about 20 minutes to produce the most awful smelling huge load of...well...poo. That's known as broody poo.

Her hormones may not have leveled off yet so that she is still doing the broody poo thing while she is brooding her hatched chicks.

As long as there is no diarrhea, blood, and it looks about normal other than a huge dark load with stench, chances are it is broody poo.

My thoughts.
