Tragic day

So sorry for your loss :hugs:hugs Your crime scene is a bit perplexing. The bird he was guarding is symptomatic of an aerial predator. Hawks & owls will often take the head and neck, put it in the nest and come back for the innards. Fox and Coyotes leave almost no evidence that they were ever there. They grab a bird and keep on running. It's also not uncommon for a hawk to take the head and neck and a Opossum come to clean up the left overs as they tend to be opportunistic hunters. I have no experience with eagles but have read they tend to grab their prey and take it somewhere else to eat it.

Was your dog on a rope, in the harness? I too advocate for a game cam to figure out what's lurking day and night.

Update: I’ve been walking the dog on a leash due to his hobbled gait. Long story short he threatened to bite me to get away into the woods. When he came back he had one of the missing hens with him.
Alive and well. He went and found their hidden nest cuz he had an egg too.
That kinda made me cringe...but guessing you know dog and it wasn't aggressive behavior.
Was hen walking while dog carried egg in mouth?
How's his leg?
