Training My Dog

Hi, we recently got a lab/(probably beagle) mix dog. He is going to be an full-time outdoor dog. I need advice on training him. My family has had two other dogs that have been full-time outdoors and lived to 12+ years. They were very well trained so I'm hoping I can get him there in a few years.

He generally stays near the house but does like to run to the neighbors. How do I train him to stick around? The neighbors kids have started to pet him and play with him so I know this is going to be a challenge. I walked him around the property line once but he hates leashes so it was hard.

I also want to make sure he is good with the chickens. Any advice?

I'm sure I'll come up with more later and will be sure to post it.

Thanks!!!

When we got our lab the former owners wanted to get rid of him because he had to much energy and was destructive (what do you expect from a 6 month old lab lock up in an apartment all day?!) We made sure he was never alone with the chickens (at the time I think we only had females). After a few months everyone was on the same page of "chickens are friends, not food" idea.
As for keeping him in the yard, I always have treats an if I feel Nitro (our dog) has gone too far I call him back and give him a treat. Obviously you can't watch your dog all day (same here). If you only play with him in one part of the yard then they will realize that that's the fun place and the best place to be (right after being by your side)

the chicken... walk him with you everytime you walk around the chickens, on leash until he ignores them then loose but under supervision.

the roaming, build a fence.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely start doing these things!!!

Do you think having him on a long line near a dog coop for a week or two would teach him what home is? We used to have our first dog on a leash before we decided to let her out full-time. She was never one to wander. Thanks!
