Training my hens to lay only in their nesting boxes...?

Mine nearly always go back to lay. We were have some problems with them laying in the hay barn occasionally... more of a problem in the summer if you know what I mean. Then I put golf balls in the next boxes a couple months ago... and no more unauthorized nesting!

You might try it, can't hurt!

Mine also free range all day long and always go back to coop to lay. I've learned to just wait till late in day to gather eggs because they all lay at different times. It's funny to watch them coming and going into the coop. I always say "Going to lay an egg?" when seeing them go in and "Thanks for the egg" when coming out. I've even looked in the coop and seen one or two literally standing in line waiting for their favorite box to become available. We have 8 nest boxes and 6 laying pullets but they all share the same 2 boxes.
