Training/Teaching a dog about chickens

I guess that I must have lucked out. My golden lab, Daisy, took to the chickens without any training. She pretty much ignores the chickens until someone drives up the driveway then she goes into flock control and herds the birds back into their coop area. I did no training at all and she works well with the flock.

I let my hound out on the leash, and he showed interest, but no real aggressive behavior. Then once without a leash but with a shock collar. He began to chase one of the girls but I had my finger on the trigger ready to buzz him. He got a nice shock, and has left them alone since.

Hello!

Well we are first time chicken owners, since April. But long time dog owners. We mostly have hunting dogs, a Pitbull, a Catahoula, and a lazy Lab mix. That being said, this spring we raised about 20 day old chicks. From day one we were very cautious about introductions, limiting interaction time to just a few moments at a time.

From day one, mostly the pit bull was one who had the greatest curiosity about the chicks. I don't think she wanted to eat them, I seriously think she wanted to mother them. Sure was very curious about them as chicks, always following them about everywhere, and all the time licking them.

For the most part our dogs were mostly well mannered before the introduction of chicks, therefore after we got them, their behaviors remained relatively unchanged. Now that our chickens are full grown, and we are raising one of the dogs from a puppy, all the animals could really care less about each other. That is, except what other goodies the others are getting! ! ;-P

The very first chicks i got, i had ordered. I kept them in the kitchen in a container for the first few days. My cocker spaniel totally fell in love with them! I think it made her mothering instinct come out. For years after that, until she died of old age, she kept a very loving watch on the chickens, no matter how many i had. She even came to me one day with something in her mouth and whining...she had been in a nest in the coop and took an egg while the hen was on a break, that was about to hatch and was 'peeping' in the shell! She thought that was the grandest thing she'd ever seen! She brought it to me so easy and gentle like it was a priceless jewel! I guess that would be my advice, is to let some babies stay in a container where the dog can just lay and watch them and become familier with them first.

That is the most amazing story! She couldn't understand how the chick got stuck in there I bet!

Our dog is a black lab boarder colie mix. she is also a very submissive dog. when she would chase them, we would 1. use the shock collar on a low setting, and 2. make a big fuss like saying NO! and waving arms around. She would get nervous when we would through a hissy fit and didn't like it so she quickly learned.
hope this helped!
