I agree.. pups tend to think of birds as very cool squeaky toys. We have a Pyr / Anatolian mix. Mishou was raised with goats.. so she knew how to protect her family.. but her first up close & in person experience with chickens didn't go well for the bird (we had a rooster decide to run into the goat pen). She had seen them through the fence.. she knew they were not a threat.. but by the time I got outside to her the chicken was very dead and well chewed. So I had to teach her that no.. the fluffy feathered things were NOT chew toys. Even though they were fun to take apart and chase.. and made very cool noises... they were not allowed to be "played" with. Now all the chickens and ducks are part of her "family".
I have an Aussie who does great with the birds, I trust her and Mishou 100%. But I also have a dachshund who I will probably never trust, his prey drive is just too strong and he gets caught up in the chase. My Lab does fine when I am with him.. he will walk through the yard and ignore the birds.. but I know if he's with the dachshund he will join in with chasing the feathered toys. He's still a pup and so is the dachshund.. so they have some work ahead of them and need time to mature.
