My Red Star chicks are 3 weeks old starting to get their feathers. Can I transfer them to a chicken coop outside. The temps reached in the low 80s. My husband doesn't want them in the house anymore. The feathers look like they are on 1/4 to 1/3. Will they be okay with the transition.
Thanks

They are kind of young, but it would probably be okay as long as you moved their heat-lamp with them and monitored the temp--as if is were an outdoor brooder.

I'd be worried about them being in a big coop when they're so small. If you have a shed or garage you could keep their brooder in until they're about 8-10 weeks, that would be ideal. Do you have other chickens you'll be introducing them to?

I can relate to not wanting them in the house. I just moved our four week old chicks out to the shed... the dust from the pine shavings was killing me!

Mine are just a week old and they went out yesterday. I have straw for bedding and plenty of fresh water and food. Along with a heat lamp that they can move away from as they have plenty of room in my large rabbit hutch. So far so good.

I'm planning on putting mine out at 4 weeks, which is this coming Sunday. It's hotter outside than they need it to be right now. Their brooder is getting too small for them and and I don't have room for a bigger brooder. On the nice days, they've spent the entire day outside, but I'm not totally comfortable leaving them outside at night yet. I'm going to try to rig up the light in the small coop. I'm not sure if it will work yet. The coop is tiny.

Thought I would update on my chicks. They are doing great. It has been down in the 50's at night. With the heat lamp on, they have all done well. They are almost 2 weeks old now.
