transporting adult chickens

I might be able to start my flock by buying a few (less than a dozen) laying hens locally (within 1 1/2 hour drive). What's the best way to transport them in the back of my Ford Expedition? Can I just use some cardboard boxes with air holes, for this one-time-only, relatively short transport? Thanks. GG

Agree - in my experience they sit down and become still during the ride, so that may actually be calming for them.

You can use cardboard boxes with holes or a proper poultry crate meant for transport of live chickens.
