Transporting chickens to a new state

Hello,
We have three hens that our kids adore and we would love to take them with us when we move from California to Seattle, WA. The city of Seattle allows three chickens - we know that, but I'm wondering if it is legal to transport pet chickens across state lines - specifically into Washington State.
Also, we'd love some advice on the best way to move them.

Edited to add, I'd suggest a pet crate or crates to move them. I like to give any pets on a trip regular short breaks to drink water or eat. Even if they have water in with them, they often don't drink while they're bouncing down the road.

Guess that means when I move to Washington it will be easier just to give my birds away and start with new ones...
