Transporting chickens to show

I don't know if this is in the right category, but I need ideas on how to transport chickens to show. I'm not sure how many I will be taking, but buying cat crates for each one is too expensive. Any ideas?

Cardboard boxes?
One medium wire dog crate will hold two hens a piece.
Maybe you could get some pallets and make wooden crates out of them like they did in the old days?

Thank you! I have a small dog crate that can hold 2 chickens and I will just use cardboard boxes for the rest
