Hello everyone, first time posting here. So I finally did it and bought chickens. I'm starting small and just bought 4 laying lowmann hens. I'm curious to how should I bring them home? I don't have any crates but I was wondering if I rig 4 milk crates with lids...would this work? Too small? I'll be driving for about 45 mins with them. Any suggestions are welcome.

Looking forward to raising some chickens!

I usually use cages. On occasion I have use a cardboard box with some shavings in the bottom. A tote would work also. Basically anything that keeps them confined and with ventilation will work.

I've transported chickens in a wire dog crate and a plastic airline style dog crate. I know you said you don't have anything like that, but you might consider picking one up at Petco or on Craigs list. Having to evacuate our home last summer due to a wildfire, I can't emphasize the importance enough of having a backup plan in place in case you had to move your chickens again.

Perhaps there is a friend who will loan you one for an afternoon if you don't want to make the investment.
