trap a dog?

You can catch a dog in a live trap. Its been done lots and lots of times.

You may also catch a few other creatures as well, but you will catch the dog.

That's baloney. Animal controls and shelters catch strays in traps all the time. Dogs aren't nearly as smart as coyotes!

To the OP: your landlord said you couldn't build any more fenced structures -- but how about a free-standing dog pen? You can buy used 10 x 10 dog kennels quite cheaply off of Craigslist, and you can put them up without damaging the land in any way. Do you think your landlord might agree to that? It would at least keep the chickens safer while you're trying to catch the dog. Just a thought!

As for trapping the dog -- if you have a shelter close by, see if they will loan you a trap. Many of them do have loaners. Then put something really nice and stinky in it, and cross your fingers!

I would absolutely have shot the dog if I had to irregardless of who owned it. I probably would have returned it once and demanded compensation and then shot it if it appeared again. I'm not going to keep returning a predator to safety so it can come back again. Luckily I didn't have to. I kept the chickens in and the dog returned today. My akita cornered it until I could loop a rope around it's neck. It had no tags just the collar I saw yesterday and was fairly well starved with scrapes and thinning patches of hair. Acting completely wild and throwing itself around on the rope growling and snarling at me. The sheriff and animal control came to get it and report the lost chickens. If it improves in personality after a few days and no one claims it (quite unlikely anyone will) they will turn it over to the humane society and if it continues to act agressive it will be PTS.

On the plus side my landlord is now mentioning building a chicken pen because she really enjoys my flock and hated seeing the pile of dead bodies by the house. Also everyone really loved dameru and my sister called her up crying even though she only sees my animals about once a month.

Great news, Akane. There are so many threads of this sort here that have much less satisfactory outcomes.

Sorry for your loss, though.

well now you have an animal that nows where to get a free meal!
did you know dogs are one of the only animals that kill for fun?
unless you shoot it you will probably always have problems out of it.

i know its heartless , but any less heartless then the owners leting it kill your chickens and run free?
