Trapped skunk

I accidentally trapped a skunk (meant to trap a possum) and have no idea what to do now. I do not believe it has already sprayed because I haven’t smelled it and the trap is decently close to my house. Will animal control take it? Last time I messed with a skunk it ended with me getting rabies shots.
Oh! Um. @MysteryChicken you have had a skunk.

Was hoping there is some secret. While I have come to terms the last several skunks to just shoot and deal with it. Either 1 big stink now or constant stinks for years and potentially lose birds.
I will not relocate. A friend on here recently lost birds to a predator. She followed tracks all the way back to tire tracks and a place where someone put a cage on the ground. Someone relocated a predator and it killed her birds.

:welcome :frow I have caught plenty of skunks over the years. We are rural on a dead end road and were the recipients of some relocations. I dug a very big hole out on the back side of our pasture and for awhile was catching a lot of skunks.. I had an issue several years ago and a skunk was digging under the gate to my chick/grow-out coop pen. I had forgot to shut the pop door and it was closed just enough that some of the chicks couldn't get inside and when I realized it it was dark and I went out and there was the skunk attempting to dig under the gate to their pen. I stomped my feet at the skunk and it turned towards me and stomped it's feet at me. I went into the house and got my gun and went back out and attempted to scare the skunk off and again it stomped it's feet at me again, it seemed persistent. I shot it and put a bucket over it until I could deal with it in the morning. I was able to let the chicks in their coop. Good luck...

Walk towards the trap with an old blanket or tarp in front of you, drape it over the trap, and then carry the trap with it'd cover out to where you can shoot the skunk safely. When there, move the cover just enough so you can do a head shot, and bury it out there.
We've done it several times, and the skunks never sprayed. If one would have, the tarp/ blanket would have taken the hit.
Wear gloves, don't handle it bare handed, and let the trap dry out, at least. Dousing the trap with soapy water, or bleach water, and rinse.

PS: if there's a reason to have it tested for rabies, DO NOT shoot it in the head! Then a body shot, wrap it in plastic, and chill, don't freeze, so it can be tested.

Every skunk I ever caught releases after they die. It's even worse than a spray. Did this not happen to you?
If I'm honest I wondered if I could get a strong cardboard box or make a cheap wood box and just set in trash can. Then the smell hits down the road after trash man hits the compactor. I only risk during the transfer and poor trash man suffers. Sounds cruel I know but is it more cruel to the skunk or the trash man?
