I know chicks are shipped all the time. If I can get this permit, I'll have to drive a min. of 2 hours to get chicks, hence a 2-hour journey home OR up to 5h & back. What is the best way for me to keep them healthy & as shock-free as possible? If I get the chicks, I'll be coming straight home, except maybe a loo break for the kids (arewethereyet/he'stouchingme/Ihavetopee... LOL).

I moved 3 states and brought most of my chicks with, of course they are a bit older and all faired well. I'd say if you're getting new babies, I'd get a small box with shavings. The smaller and cozier, the better - IMO. They will snuggle up to each other. When you stop for bathroom breaks you could offer water, but they shouldn't need it since their part of the drive would only be a couple hours vs. your round trip time.

Keep them warm and dry when you get home you can give them some electrolytes or vitamin boost but honestly they should be fine. It's not like they are having to endure the air shipment or the USPS!!

THNX! This is my first time, so I'm so excited & nervous, LOL. Thanks for your speedy response!

I drove a couple hours to get my chicks. The oldest was 2 weeks and the youngest was a few days. They all traveled fine....and slept most of the way home. Good luck!

I know! It's totally exciting to get those little babies. I am waiting for my eggs to hatch. I have some Polish popping their little beaks out as we speak. Plus, I'm waiting to get my call from Cackle tomorrow. I have been waiting for like a month now and it's killing me. I got my new 5 tier brooder all set up and it's just waiting for the fuzzy butts to arrive!!
