would you let your chickens live in a treated wood coop. i bought the wood, power saw, power drill, power stapler.......... and made my own coop. when i told everyone that i made it out of treated wood, everyone had the same reaction. BAD!!! Should I burn it and start over or is it fine to use. please give opinions!

That's just fine! Paint the whole inside with a semi-gloss paint, let it dry thoroughly, and they will be fine. I just wouldn't let them roost on treated wood that is not painted.

If it is good enough to build decks and playgrounds with, it's good enough for chickens. I've yet to see a drooly chicken suck on a treated 2 x 6, unlike several todlers I know. If you are truly concerned about it, call the lumber yard and have them fax or email you the MSDS sheet on it and you can read the safety sheet yourself.

thank you. i got enough wood for three small coops 2x2x4 trying to save money by building my own and cringed at the thought of having to scrap it all. i will get some paint today.

Next time it'd be better to use untreated (not so much for the chickens, as for the environment around the plants that *make* treated wood)... but provided you seal it well with paint or whatever, I would not worry about it at ALL.

BTW probably you were just using a figure of speech, but, just watned to comment that one should NEVER BURN TREATED WOOD.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Yes, treated lumber is more expensive. I only use it for ground contact. Other than that I don't see any advantage of using it. If you try painting what you got you may have to wait a while. Paint doesn't stick too good to new treated lumber. Post some pics. Will
