I know we're supposed to make a littl eboot to hold the chicks toes flat. What's the best type of tape to use and how long should it stay on?

My little roo had curled feet, and I think the breeder kept shoes on him for 2 weeks, until they seemed to straighten out. She used scotch tape over a little shoe. He would kick off his shoes all the time, but it worked anyways. He has one toe that is a bit crooked, but otherwise, you'd never know he was lame when he hatched.

You don't need to make a little shoe or boot. If you have a copy of Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens, there's excellent instructions on how to straighten curled or crooked chick toes. First aid tape (white adhesive) or band-aids work. Carefully straighten each affected toe, then wrap it securely but not too tightly. This works better when the chicks are younger and their bones are softer. The chick may stumble for a bit but will quickly adapt to the footwear. Good luck!

Here is a pic of one that I did recently. I always have them wear them for 5 days. I use a small piece of thin cardboard and round the edges in the front. I put a piece of double-sided tape on top and place the chicks foot on it making sure the toes are straight. Then I put a piece of scotch tape all around. Then I put another piece of double-sided tape on the bottom and dip it in some sugar to keep it from sticking to the bedding and gives it some traction.

Works well for us. This baby also had mild spraddled legs so that is why it is wearing a hobble.
