Hi all,

I recently put a post up regarding one of my lovely ladies, Ed, who had a suspected respiratory infection. After a trip to the vets and a few days on antibiotics she is starting to show improvement, although she has required a bit of force feeding she's starting to eat on her own now and it looks like we may have turned a corner.

Obviously she was quarantined as soon as we saw she was having problems but it looks like the rest of my flock have runny noses. They're all still lively happy hens but we don't want another Ed situation on our hands.

It would be far too expensive to go to the vets and get antibiotic prescriptions for them all so I'm looking to see what other people have done in this situation. In the UK we need a prescription for everything but there's always another way if you know what you need.

I can get my hands on some tylosin to go in the water supply but what do people suggest. We are quite new to the joys of chickens and of rather not make them worse by guessing with the help of Google.

I'm sorry that you are having trouble :hugs
What did the vet prescribe for you? Can he give you Tylosin soluble to go in the flock's water?
It would be good to know which respiratory disease you are dealing with. Since your hen seems to be responding the antibiotic treatment, it might be Mycoplasma, but still hard to know. Denagard (tiamulin) is used for treating Mycoplasma, so that's something to look into as well.

Its been a stressful few days with not knowing if she would pull through and she's always been my secret favourite but today she's really picked up and starting to be her usual asshole self.

Unfortunately the vet kind of said she might have an infection (shrug) and prescribed her Baytril. She didn't know a great deal about chickens and the kind of people around here that do would tell me to cull her because they wouldn't see her as a pet.

I can get the water soluble tylosin which would definitely make treating my other 7 girls easier.

Thanks for your reply.
