How old do chicks need to be before they can be safely treated for lice? And what would be the best method to use? I had to bring 2 chicks in Saturday night that were hatched under a broody. Evidently, during the incubation period and unbeknownst to me, the hen, a Silkie, supported a pretty good lice population. She was not doing a very good job at all in taking care of her babies so I brought them in and put them in my brooder with 3 other chicks that I had just hatched in the incubator. All 5 chicks were hatched within a day of each other. I did not realize the broody hatched chicks were lice infested until this morning - and by now I am sure all have lice. Soooo . . . any ideas anyone? Can I use Sevin dust on them at this age? or is there something else that would work better?

I have successfully sevin dusted chicks that were around 3-4 weeks old. But I made sure I didn't get it in their little faces. I put it in an old sock tied shut and powder puffed them. It wasn't exact- so I felt like maybe I didn't do a thorough treatment. I didn't want to kill them! It was a just-in-case dusting, as I was dusting the whole flock and they were within mite distribution range.

Make sure you retreat as is recommended:

Thanks ChickensAreSweet! And thanks for the bump gritsar. Hopefully the broody and chicks are the only ones infested. They were housed completely separate from the rest of my flock.
