Little bit of background:

I just bought a hen and her six chicks from an extremely rural part of Bangladesh, where I am staying for now. I live in Dhaka, the capital city. Who knows what the birds have been exposed to, and getting even basic supplies for them has been difficult.

After spending some time with Mama and chicks, I've noticed that the little ones all have what looks like red spots on their legs and under their wings. Mama is too... nervous, and frankly untame, to let me inspect her properly. She probably has it too. What can I use, that is commonly in the house hold (like as vinegar maybe), to treat for mites?

Red spots are moving...or you think the spots may be bites?
If they do have mites, not sure anything but a good insecticide will get rid of them.

Here's how I check them over real well for mites and/or lice:

Google images of lice/mites and their eggs before the inspection so you'll know what you're looking for.

Part the feathers right down to the skin around vent, head/neck and under wings.

Best done well after dark with a strong flashlight/headlight, easier to 'catch' bird and also to check for the mites that live in structure and only come out at night to feed off roosting birds.

Wipe a white paper towel along the underside of roost to look for red smears(smashed well fed mites).

Oh, and...Welcome to BYC! @Crimson Carnation
Here's how to add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!

I thought I had already added my location, but maybe I forgot to save the changes.

Thanks for your reply. I did do a wipe and had red smears. I haven't been able to even find a proper feeder, waterer, and had trouble just finding chick feed. I don't think I'll be able to get a chicken friendly insecticide.

Well, you can try the herby stuff linked by Cryss....but Permethrin is the best IMO.
