Treating with Ivermectin

Thank you, ChickensAreSweet, this has been much more of a headache than I was expecting it to be. I didn't mean I wouldn't use dust on them, it was just that up until now from everything I was reading, the Ivermectin took care of all of them and sounded easier to use. Keeping dust out of their faces seems intimidating!

Do you happen to know if it is okay to use the Ivermectin and the poultry dust at the same time? And also, If I have to keep the dust away from their faces, is it going to take care of the lice and eggs on their faces?

Thank you again to everyone.

Oh you are welcome- I am having a little bit of trouble giving you advice because all my experience is with mites, not lice.

You can certainly give both the dust and the ivermectin at the same time.
I have given Eprinex and dust at the same time with no ill effects.
The lice and eggs on their faces...I don't know how to advise you. If it were me, I'd slather them with vaseline on their faces to smother the bugs hopefully but I don't know if that would work. It works for scaly leg mites which attack the face- smothers them.

Chickens can be a lot of work. But when those bugs are gone the enjoyment comes back. Hang in there!

Haha, yeah.

Well, I think we are going to wait on the dust to see what happens first. Even if it means tossing eggs longer, at least we will know for the future. I don't wish to put any bigger a chemical load on them than I have to, and even though we will probably end up using both, I feel like it will be easier on their systems not to have both at the same time.

I will report back with my findings, heh. At this point, I am going to plan on having to dust as well, and hope that maybe I don't have to.

One more thing I want to be clear about. Do I retreat with Ivermectin in one week, or two? I know ChickensAreSweet said one week in one post, but I am not sure if that was in reference to dust or Ivermectin.

I would not administer ivermectin one week later. Sorry about the confusion.

I believe folks give it again in 2 weeks but am not sure...here's an ehow on it (I have actually never given it- only Eprinex)

You might want to search byc for it too! Make sure you know what kind you have, whether it be pour-on, injectable, etc.

Don't give the pour-on internally.

When I gave Eprinex I didn't repeat it. I only gave one dose with simultaneous dusting, then repeated the dusting.

Ahh, good, 2 weeks is what I had thought I was supposed to do for it. Thank you for clearing that up! I have done a lot of looking it up and reading on BYC, and either I am an inept searcher, or there just wasn't that much out there. I tried a number of different ways to search, and found a handful of people asking about it, but not a whole lot in the answer department, which is why I ended up just starting a thread.

I read a lot online, too, but, like I said, my biggest problem was conflicting information.

Thank you again, I'm going to go check out that link now.

Using Sevin in your coop or on your birds is dangerous in my opinion. It is a known carcinogen and developmental toxin. It most likely has the ability to bioaccummulate. Before using any chemicals on your land or your livestock, or even in your home, check out this database of chemicals, here is the listing for Sevin:

Ivermectin, on the other hand, is relatively benign. I have taken it myself and am going to dose my birds for Capillaria. Ivermectin is a standard drug administered to humans as well as livestock. the link that the other respondent sent on lice and mites was very informative, however, it did specify the use of Ivermectin, and did not say that it was only recommending it for mites.

Finally, we have been dipping our birds in Poultry Protector for the lice and mites. It really works and is totally natural. You can also spray your chicken house and yard with it as well. It has helped a lot with our mite issues.

I have just discovered that it is actually against EPA's law to use pesticides off-label. Yes don't use sevin dust anymore (not approved for poultry anymore).
