I've decided that my chickens' bare necks must have been caused by lice or mites, I can see some lice on them for sure. Does anyone have any preferred treatments? I'm not afraid to use chemicals depending on what it is, but I want something that is safe and works. I have been reading thread after thread, and I'm really lost on what I should use with all of the difference products and the debates on each. I read that Ivermectin works, but it isn't made for chickens and can be dangerous, while DE and other powders made for it, don't really treat an infestation, just prevents it. I also have a few chicks that are at about 5 weeks and 2 broody hens that are on about 15 days of incubation, I don't want to harm any of them in particular. Thanks in advance!

Sevin 5%, all the way. It is used to kill bad bugs in gardens, but kills lice too. I sprinkle it on the perches, in the boxes, on the floor, everywhere. In the places where they take dirt baths is a good place, too. Do it each day for one or two days, then repeat in about 2 weeks.

That should take care of the problem.

I use Permethrin 10 to spray my coops and pens. I use Manna Pro's Poultry Protector to spray the chickens. We get lice and mites here every summer and the Permethrin 10 and Poultry Protector take care of the problem well. I have had zero problems in the years that I've been using them. You can add DE into their dusting holes to help or try putting ash or charcoal from a fire into the dusting holes, that will help with lice and mites as well. It won't hurt them.

I've never heard of using ash. We did just burn a pile of scrap lumber and they were rolling in the ashes, and they didn't have any lice then. Never thought that that was the reason...

Yes, using ash is kind of an old timey way that has almost died out. I wouldn't have known about it if my grandma hadn't told me.

Thanks fo rthe replies, I think I will put the DE in a mini pool for them to dust in whenever they want and dust the chickens with the Sevin 5% as well as around the coop, but is the sevin 5% bad for them to breathe in, or is it fairly safe? And I'll have to remember the ashes for next time we ignite our burn pile.

5% is safe for them to breath and to eat (although they probably shouldn't and won't try to either) in moderation. Anything higher than 5% could be harmful. If you go to a farm supply store that has smart chicken people they can probably tell you more about it, and also recommend some other treatments

Ash is good , i see from my grandma ,is kill lice and mice if you already have and i also use Ivromec and inject them on the breast under the skin for every 6 mo that go in the blood so that protect to get mice and lice.
1/2 cc for large flow and 1/4 cc for bantam.

I think my flock is too large, and in some cases wild, to inject them all. If my flock was smaller I think I would much rather inject them than Sevin their coop every two weeks. I got a bad case o' the chicken fever and I can't stop the love!

And, I assume you meant mites, not mice right? That would be terrifying to have chickens covered in mice...
