We just got our first 6-week-old (?) pullets yesterday. We were given turkey grow feed for them to eat, but are they old enough for treats like mealworms, sunflower seeds, etc.? When are they ready for oyster shells? Any thoughts about electrolytes? It's pretty hot here in So. Cal.

They're old enough, although they may not be sure what the treats are quite yet. They'll learn eventually.

You can put out oyster shell now if you want. They won't really need it until 16 weeks at the minimum, but they only eat it if they know they need it, so it's not going to harm them.

Electrolytes aren't really necessary at 6 weeks, but it can't hurt them.

Thanks, QueenMisha. I just gave them some mealworms, which they loved. Then one of them gave me a very imperious look as if to say,"We're done now," and walked up into their coop. Baby steps.

We have one 6 week old and three 4 weeks old. So far they go bonkers over watermelon and meal worms. I gave them electrolyte water because the heat index here in Texas is 110 this week.

On hot days you might try some plain yogurt, buttermilk, cucumbers, or melon in limited amounts.
