What kind of treats can you give week old chicks... And MAN, they are not a week old yet and they are getting feathers and have gotten quite big..WOW..

My feed store sells small crickets. I bet you could get away with it. They don't look much bigger than a pebble.

I give my chickens some:

Bread
Crickets
Most insects I can find (Nothing that I don't know about that could harm them. Usually stuff like Moths, Grasshoppers, Worms are good.)

Mine love yogurt, mashed up bananas, grubs, beet leaves, cabbage, swiss chard leaves...have not tried boiled or scrambled eggs yet.

Good luck,

ETA: I provide each brooder with a container of sand from my garden. They eat it and take dust bathes.

Make sure you have grit available. Small grit for small chicks and progressively larger for bigger birds. I use chick grit and parakeet grit (WalMart 1.29/box in the pet aisle)for my 4 week or younger birds, and regular for older chicks. They have done very well.
Only use grit when giving any food other than chick starter!

Thanks guys,,,, Man I can't believe how big these guys are getting.. we were gone for 2 1/2 days, and wow.... they have twice as many feathers as they had before we left...LOL

I've been thinking about starting treats for my chicks as well. They are about 2 weeks now. What is this about grit?
The chicks are living the high life right now, completely indoor as the weather has been way too cold and rainy here. Any recomendations of the type of grit? Should I just scatter it around or put it in a dish??
