My chickens are pets and as previously mentioned live in a coop and run and no free ranging (I live in western australia and in summer there are tiger snakes around, and lots of big chicken hawks - just too dangerous for the girls to be out - their run is wired all round with aviary mesh). They get their layer mix and various 'treats' - I buy fresh vegies for them on a regular basis as well as growing some pot plants for them to nibble at (chia atm and sunflowers) and they get scratch (wheat and sunflower seeds) in treat balls and toys, natural yoghurt, tucker time dog roll, cheese, eggs, mealworms .. lots of treats actually lol!! I also tend to give them some lucerne (alfalfa I think it is called in america?) and oaten/wheaten chaff to scratch about in in their run since there is no grass (not any more lol).
