Can I give my five day old chicks anything besides crumble and water ? Are they allowed to be put in the yard for a little R&R ?

Yes, they can be outside briefly -- use your judgment. They can live outside with the right setup. Treats are really not necessary and can be a problem, especially this young. You change their nutritional balance when you give them, and their throats are still tiny so it's easy to give too large pieces. You can moisten a little chick feed with water or plain yougurt, but throw anything away that it doesn't eat in a few minutes.
