Tree fell on my duck pen today

So am sitting in my office today (work from home), and I heat a crack and a Whooshing sound

I look out and see a large clump of leaves where there has never been a large clump of leaves

so I got running outside and a 30ish foot tall pecan tree fell right into my duck pen crushing it. It wasn’t windy at all. We’ve just gotten so much rain all year it made the ground so soft it just toppled over out of nowhere

thankfully all my ducks were in their coops at the back of the pen and were safe. All accounted for. But now I have 8 ducks in dog crates on my living room Til I can build them a new pen

I’ve had that happen on my fences and three sheds. So sorry it happened to you but glad your ducks are safe. I don’t think any of you will be happy for long with them inside crates inside your home so Godspeed in rebuilding.

Yeah we are looking at options now. Lumber is still pricey around here and money is tight. And we need to get that cleared as it really is the optimum spot in our yard for a pen. So we have to suck up some ducks in the house for a few days at least

just glad none of them were hurt or killed

How scary that must have been. It's def not a good time to build. Maybe something temporary until lumber prices go down? As long as their coop is still safe.
What a blessing they were all still inside when the tree fell.

There were 4 coops in the pen. 2 ducks to a coop. Thankfully the back end held up just enough where the coops were damaged but not destroyed

one had the back crushed but the front secure. Another cracked the frame but held up. Another had a piece of 2x4 cross beam break and pierce it like a spear but only a couple inches. 1 looks like it may be salvageable

the pen is sadly destroyed but it was sturdy enough where it counted to protect them which I am thankful for

Heh the pen was big, 400 sq feet so they had room. And they never wanted to leave it. Before a snapping turtle moved into my pond I would try to get them to come out and free range and they would go right back into their pen heh. We have a ton of hawks in the area and they felt safe in there I think

Wow that was a close call and scary for everyone. Any chance of reconfiguring the dog crates into some kind of bigger run?

Good luck in the renovation. Remnants of Ida have arrived, and there will be rain and wind for the next 24 hours. Trees will be coming down.
