My beautiful runner Phoebe has been sick for for a month. After repeated vet visits for respiratory distress and weeks of antibiotics and antifungal medicine, today they diagnosed her with trichomoniasis. She has had pneumonia this entire time and with the prescribed meds she hasn't really gotten much better. Now we have a proper diagnosis for what may be causing all this and the vet couldn't prescribe the correct meds due to her being a duck. Long story short I got some Ronidazole which is used for treating Trichomoniasis. Anyone have experience treating trichomoniasis in ducks? This girl is a fighter and I think once we get the right meds in her she will recover. Thank you for any and all input.

Side note- I went to the most comprehensive avian vet in my area and I am slightly annoyed that it has taken 3 emergency visits over the course of a month for them to finally test for parasites. But here we are... At least now w elbow why the pneumonia hasn't gotten better. They also swabbed her trachea for gapeworm and we are waiting on the results for that. Thank you for reading my mini rant 🤦‍♀️

What other medications has the vet prescribed?
She has been taking Sulfa Trimethoprim for the bacterial pneumonia and Terbinafine for the Fungal infection. This last visit the poop sample didn't show the fungal infection but they're having us continue both medications since her X-ray still shows pneumonia. The best said they couldn't legally prescribe Ronidazole for the trichomoniasis because it's not approved for use in food animals. Even though we will obviously never eat our duck.

We already did Baytril followed by Clavamox and it didn't help. The sulfa trimethoprim she's on now seems to help. But I think the reason she hasn't fully gotten well is because the parasitic infection wasn't addressed. I'm hoping the Ronidazole will finally straighten her out since it treats trichomoniasis

Ronidazole is very effective against Trichomonia The dosage for Ronidazole in cats is 30mg/kg and it it is available as a 10% solution. A 5ml teaspoon contains 500mg.

I have no experience of using this for ducks. The liquid is bitter and may not be acceptable to a duck; the medicine is very neurotoxic.

If you do go ahead and use Ronidazole for your duck, be very careful not to give more than 30mg/kg -- round down the dose for the weight of your duck, don't round up; watch very carefully for signs of neurotoxicity such as staggering gate. Stop it immediately if you get signs of neurotxicity

Thank you! I have the 60mg powder that comes with a 1gr scoop. Each duck is about 1.7 kg.
