....it is working like a charm! The 3-4 week old chickens had a bout of diarrhea and it was smelly! I was wondering if it was just the cecum (is that what it's called???) poop, but it seemed a little too frequent. Not bloody or anything, just brown and smelly.

Anyway, to my questions. How often should I do the yogurt/oatmeal thing? Once a day? Twice a day? Every other day?

Also, how long should I keep this up? 1 week, just a few days, etc?

Thanks!

Did you give them the oatmeal and yogurt BECAUSE they had diarh? Or did they get it from the oatmeal and yogurt?

Take it easy on the yogurt. It does give them some probiotics but they can't digest the milk protein in it so they will get a bit of a digestive tract reaction if given too much. I used to have a good link explaining milk products and birds.

Cecal poop is normal and it does stink. As with any treat, oatmeal and yogurt should be given in small amounts a couple times a week is you want. My big girls get a cup of oatmeal mixed with a cup of yogurt once a week or two weeks. They are almost a year old and there are 8 of them so it is just enough. Your chicks should get treats only occasionally and introduce a single food at a time. If there is a problem, then you will know right away what food it is causing the problem.

I don't understand why oatmeal should be given once a week only. My chicks get it every day. And chickens too. Also, I've read that fresh milk is not good for chickens (lactose) but cottage cheese and yogurt are ok
