I plan to make a trifle to take as a dessert to my DBF's family Xmas party this Sunday.

    NEED RECIPES PLEASE!

I can make the cake part from scratch if needed, I have frozen raspberries & blackberries in freezer (DD ate all the frozen blueberries). Also have blackberry and mixed berry jam in 8 0z. jelly jars.

So ... anyone have a good trifle recipe?

I use an instant [pudding ..such as cheesecake flavor, made up with half the milk, then add one cup of sour cream and 1 cup of cool whip all folded in together and alternate with your fruit and cake.

There is no recipe for trifle. You simply layer cubes of cake, fresh fruit, whipped cream, and pudding. End up with whipped cream as the top layer. I use home made pudding, because it is no more work than the box kind that has to be cooked. I don't like instant pudding, but if your family likes it, you could use instant pudding.

It's traditional to use a glass bowl, so you can see the layers.

I wouldn't use the jam, but the berries will make a nice trifle. Use either a yellow cake or pound cake and vanilla pudding with berries. Home made cake is what I use, but again, if your family likes cake mixes, you can use a mix cake, or you can buy a frozen pound cake and use that.

I've made a black forest trifle using chocolate cake, fresh pitted cherries, chocolate pudding, and whipped cream. You could make the black forest trifle using cooked cherry pie filling, too.

    Thanks for the ideas.

I've decided to go with chocolate cake (I'll bake it later today). After it cools, I'll cube it. Mix up some chocolate pudding, layer that in with green and red marischino cherries and top with cool whip, probably more cherries on top for color.

His family is doing a sandwich platter from Subway along with the usual chips, dip, & veggie tray which offends my Polish-American sensibilities. "What? No sausage?! We have 3 different kinds. Whaddaya mean 'no one likes herring so we don't serve that'?" It's not Christmas without herring!"

So after all these years, I guess I get to find out how non Polish or Germans celebrate Christmas.

I had to tell my dad not to get as much herring this year. Wayne was German, so pickled and/or creamed herring was a staple of his childhood and he ate a lot at my Dad's every Christmas

    It was a HUGE success.

I took a thing of cool whip to top it off with once we got to the party. I set it down on the table, put presents under the tree, said hi to a few people and came back to top it off and two people had already dug in! [IMG]

When I said that I had to put the cool whip on top, the one girl's eyes brightened and she said, "Oh! That's even better!"
