So I have an idea..not sure if good or bad..I want to try to trim their feathers under their belly (like where they would be if they were broody) when summer comes. I noticed my broody hens were less hot than the fully feathered ones. Will this cause any discomfort or pain to the hen? Bc I know feathers bleed and are deeply connected with surrounding muscles..and also I’m not a chicken anatomy expert.
I have a random pic from the internet of some broody hen so you have an idea of the area I want to trim. Bc I don’t want to trim anywhere else in case of rain/wind other elements—they would need their upper feathers to protect them from it.
Has anybody tried this before? Is this cruel and will it harm the hens? Should I just trim the feathers but avoid quill? Or will it force her to regrow new feathers if I do that(which could take alot of energy to regrow featherss) ..i am contemplating bc some of my girls are big and have lots of feathers and I worry about heat stress exposure 24/7 and looking for ways to provide some kind of relief (Yes I do many other things to help relieve heat stress but we are in TX and it stays hot overnight sometimes)
Any ideas?
What are your thoughts?
