I've got a magpie and a runner mix that are about 10 weeks old now. Their claws are getting SHARP, they keep scratching me when I pick them up. Is it ok to trim them down a bit? Would I be hurting their defense in case of a predator?

Ducks don't use their feet to protect themselves from a predator so trimming toenails is not detrimental to them. Use dog nail clippers being careful not to cut into the quick or bleeding will occur.

I had to clip my ducks claws a few weeks back as they was very sharp, and even though I took a tiny bit off I still caught the quick!! :(
So from now on as long as its only a small bit I might use a nail filer and save the clippers for any longer ones.....maybe try a filer first?

Either way, good luck :)

I was told just to use a nail filer. And that way you can even round them out. Even with clippers you still get somewhat sharp edges and would need some fileing. Hope all goes well :)
