I hope this is the correct place to post this. ? I have been told that trimming s roos spurs will make them less aggressive. ?? Fact or fiction ? I had a gentle old roo one time and I VERY CAREFULLY trimmed the end of his spurs with a horse hoof nipper. I did not do this because he as aggressive but at the time I only had 2 hens and he was wearing them out. He was such a sweet guy to start with I could not tell if this changed his demure or not.

I don’t have a clue why it would. I seriously doubt they can even grasp the concept of whether their claws are sharp or not. Maybe by handling him to do it you are showing him who’s boss? But all you have to do to get that message across is handle him, whether you trim the nails or not.

By blunting the sharp ends of the claws you can reduce the damage a rooster might do when treading (covering, mating, whatever you want to call it) a hen. I did that with an adolescent. That took care of the problem until he and the pullets matured enough so it was no longer a problem.
