I have a three week old RIR/dark brahma cross (RIR sire) that has been worrying me on and off in regards to her sex.
I’ve attached a few pictures of her (who I will continue to refer to as female until proven otherwise so as to hopefully manifest it into being true) for reference.

Now I know her mother being a Brahma makes things difficult, and her being a mix isn’t doing me any favors. Her feathers for the most part made me think hen, even the mottling of her chest had me hopeful, but now at three weeks she has darker red feathers coming in. Her father being a Rhode Island Red could be the cause of this but the sudden shift to rusty red has me anxious.
I’ve already made a deal with myself that since I’m such a sucker for Brahmas I will still keep her if she indeed is a he (temperament permitting) but I’d still prefer a pullet.

So hearing from the people who have already replied, for once hearing that it’s too early to tell is a relief! At least that means there are no obvious signs of her being male, and I will update around six weeks to see if things have become clearer.
Thanks to you all!

So it’s been a few weeks since my initial post, and the chicks are now six weeks and one day old, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to post this bird again with hopes of potentially getting a better gauge of their sex. He/she has definitely undergone some significant and unexpected color changes in the last few weeks.

And for comparison I also am attaching some pictures of this chickens sibling/half sibling (my assumption is they are full siblings but as they grow I am more and more leaning to the idea that this one’s sire is my silver laced Cochin bantam, in fact my only reason to assume he isn’t the father is I didn’t think a Cochin bantam could mount a full sized dark brahma, but I guess short fellas have to get a win sometimes right?)

I know six weeks might still be too young, but I figured there will be other people who might get some help from my learning journey just as much as I have from posts other people have made in the past, so posting every few weeks until I’m certain could be a decent idea.

Those are girls/Pullets. A pullet is the name for a female chicken less than a year old. Congratulations!!!
I see no wattles growing which is a perfect sign they are females.
Really! I was hopeful that the first one was a pullet but I had pretty much resigned myself to assuming the second one was a cockerel, since it has a much more developed comb and slight wattles compare to its sibling!
