Thank you. We did not have time today for a necropsy, and did not have available refrigeration to keep her in overnight so we went ahead and disposed of her. I seem to have had a bad run of luck recently. I've lost 2 of my girls in the past few months. The other we did do a home necropsy and determined that she had reproductive cancer. Which was strange because she was one of the 2 that were just starting to lay when we got them. So she was fairly young. My understanding is that breeds that are good laying chickens tend to have a higher instance of reproductive issues, which is logical to me. But that they also have a shorter life span. I don't know what data that's based off of. If it includes back yard chickens or just commercial farms. Or a combination of both... My guess would be the commercial farms would cull and hens who's egg production was dwindling. Maybe I can find something about that. For me the eggs are a bonus. I just enjoy my having my girls around.
