My Coop
My Coop
Hi, I'm Emily, and I have a new 8 bird flock just outside Minneapolis, Minnesota. The girls are 17 weeks old this week and should be laying in the next month, or any day now!

I'm having fun (and stressing) about the coop and run. I thought 4 or 5 birds would be perfect then chicken math struck and now I have 8 ;). The coop was modified immediately (see attached pic) to make room for all the girls but the roosts haven't been adjusted to my satisfaction and I need to add more ventilation and possibly insulation for the winter months. Currently, the flock free ranges our back yard (Approx 1/2 acre) about 12 hours a day, although, they seem to love exploring the concrete patio we have directly out side our back door and pooping all over it, which is becoming an issue cause...eeeewwww!

I"m trying to learn more about exploring BYC.com I see so much knowledge here and want to be able to access info using searches and forum posts etc.

Good morning! We have at least 3 things in common - I also am (relatively) new here, I also live in MN, and I also have chickens! Just wanted to welcome you to BYC, I just love it here, and think you will, too!:welcome

Hello Emily and welcome to BYC. This link may help - http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/winter-chicken-keeping, and this - http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/winter-coop-temperatures

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/category/learning-center.11/ and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

All the best

Hi there :frow
Welcome to BYC!
We are glad you joined our flock.
This video should help you find your way around.

Yay! What part on MN?
We live just outside of Maple Lake, which is about 40 miles NW of Minneapolis. I grew up in Mpls., but find that I'm a country girl at heart!
I just realized my profile says I've been here since 2016, but that must have been when I signed up as a member. I don't remember taking part in any conversations on here since just a few days ago, so I consider myself a "new" member!
