Eggchel,
I have a really old trumpet vine and the deer eat all the leaves up to their level...so there are very few left for the chooks to nibble on. And they have not shown any issues, however, I just checked it on the toxic plants list and this is what they say:
TRUMPET VINE (Campsis spp.); leaves, flowers; plant also causes dermatitis.

So although trumpet vines will bring the hummingbirds from miles away, it's probably not good to plant it around the pen.

I wish someone would come blow my trumpet vine up!!!!

I have ppoured straight roundup on it, survived the ice storm, and a big wind storm this summer that took it down off my carport and it comes back stronger and stronger It is possessed!!!!!!

If you want to kill anything, now is the time. As the plant dies down, it takes nutrients back into the roots. Inject round-up or 2-4D right into the plant.

FYI-I believe the trumpet vine seeds need to be stratified to germinate.
see this website for info about what this means.
