Last night was night 3 of trying to get the chickens to go up the ramp into the coop from the run. They go in and out of the coop all day but in the evening seem to hang in the run, waiting for something. They sort of give the look of "Are you coming outside to see us?"
Anyway, I'm deciding if I should head out to get them in and I look out the window. They are all in the run with that end of day look again.
All of the sudden I hear from up the road (I live rural) a bottle rocket or roman candle and 5 or so firecrackers.
They've never heard that before. They all crouch down (half standing) and freeze in place.
I decide to wait 5 minutes and let them relax a bit.
Five minutes later, I look our the window - they are still frozen!!
Well, I slip my shoes on and head out the side door and out into the lawn. Once they see me it's back to normal. One more round of firecrackers and they don't freeze but they are wired. I get them up in the coop and they are not happy at all. Peeping and peeping. There is one left in the run with no interest in coming to me - shell-shocked I fear.
I finally get her and put he in with the others. They are jammed next to the side coop door wanting out. Pecking the door. I checked again 15 minutes later and they are settled in on their roost.
Hopefully a smoother night tonight with no explosions.
They go in and out all day long. Sometimes on a cold morning they begrudgingly come out and peck at some food and water and then right back up the ramp into the coop. But heaven forbid they head up at night!
