Grackles and cowbirds are not the same. Check out http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/537/_/Great-tailed_Grackle.aspx. They are a VERY smart bird. I have heard that they eat poop, although a friend told me dog poop! (although I have never seen that).

What I see them eating is pecans, dropped from up high to crack them open, dog or cat food (which they drop in water to soften it) and any/all of my chicken & pigeon feed they can get to. They love to wade through irrigation water for worms and other bugs.

Anyways, I have a young baby still on its hocks that fell out of her nest (males are all shiny black, females have a brownish-greenish-yellowish breast & a dull blackish brown back & face). Seems like every year I rescue a few--if they aren't too small I can feed them until they are old enough to fly and go back to their flock. Babies are raised communally by the entire flock, not just their parents.

No, she wasn't in my mouth--but she did dig her needle sharp talons into my hands--OUCH!
