trying to add a window to my chicken coop but know nothing about tools

Ditto using the drill bit to make a small hole in each corner of the rectangle, so your blade can have a starting opening. The piece of plywood you end up with could serve as a door over that window once the hardware cloth (mounted on inside) is in place. Lightly sand down the edges, get the right type of hinge (hinges confuse me...), paint both sides of the wood piece, then attach like a door to close off your new window in the winter, if that is your intent.

Take this with a grain of salt since I am no construction expert, but if you drill a pilot hole with a drill in the corners it will give you a starting point. That's what I did and my coop hasn't fallen down... yet

A sawzall with a fine tooth blade, but I don't own a jigsaw. I imagine a jigsaw would work better

Jigsaw would be slower... but safer. Jig saws have a shorter stroke than a sawzall. I assume you would be cutting through something like T-11 siding??? 1/4 thickness would be the max for a jigsaw.
