I have about 3 or 4 chicks in my group that are exceptionally vocal. They often just stand around stretching tall and shouting seemingly for no reason. Today one of them started trilling his sharp cheep, and he seemed shocked by the new noise, and then quite proud of himself and kept doing it. I went to get my phone to video it and he stopped. He’s the most vocal, we call him Screech. The chicks are about 2 days old now, could he be learning to crow, or do both genders do this?

Yes, both ... it is a personal manner... doesn't be related to the gender.

I have a hen, started to peep, cirp and screem so loud and intense, that I also thought she's a male.
But she is a beautiful girl.... and still the loudest. Even more than my roos.
That's why I called her Tweety 🙈
