I have a few questions. Sorry for posting so much lately.i got 3 hens and a rooster a month ago Saturday April 17. I hen lays faithfully each day including day I got her.:) today one of the other hens was in the nesting box, she would sit a bit then get up look under herself, then do it again sit then look but no egg. Her owner said might take few more months but she said also a year old. Any thoughts.

Ok second topic. I I got 6 hens from what I felt were poor living conditions Saturday April 10 so a week ago. I understand that molting happens in the fall. I've provided some pics below. I've checked for mites and lice but saw nothing, will buy some dusting powder tomorrow just in case. The previous owner of the first 4 suggested giving ivermectin to treat for worms. She thought ratio was 5 drops per neck. Anyone know the dosage please.

All six have dull wattles and combs and they haven't been coming outside much so I built them a separate run just for them and they seemed pretty happy today. Shooed em out in morning, gave some food and water, the had shelter too. Came home to scratching chickens and they were dust bathing. I read to add ash to where they bathe, as might help clear some things up. Just wanted some advice please. My new 6 seem down and just want to help. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm concerned by how red a couple of my hens neck is. Is this normal or is there something else wrong. I don't know how to check if the crop is ful to see if that is problem. TIA.

It honestly seems like they just need some time in good living conditions. If they came from poor conditions, I would just focus on TLC. It does look like they are molting, in which case, try not to mess with them much as it is painful for them. That could also be why they don't seem to be full of energy, it takes a lot of energy to grow their feathers back and they are pretty laid back while molting. One of mine is molting right now as well. I think she ignores the seasons, haha.

If you have access to Diatomaceous Earth, I would get some (or buy online). You can supplement it in their food to help with worms, and you can add it to the coop to keep it dry, and it can be used to help with dust baths. One purchase will last you a looooong time.

Laying may be sporadic for many reasons. Molting, a new home, and age all contribute to laying. Your hen who was sitting in the boxes could easily be practicing. They begin their routine before the first egg ever comes out! I think the dull wattles/combs, and some of these things will clear themselves up if they are taken good care of.

I'm so happy right now. I built a second pen for the new hens last week. The rooster has been keeping the new ones from the first three. Yesterday he mated with 3 of the new ones and all the old ones. Today he went into the pen with the new girls. THEN when i went into the coop i had 3 eggs. Awesome start to my day.

Thank you all for your advice. It has worked. I also built a second roost for the new girls
