Trying to find out what attacked the duck.......Graphic pictures

Our hawks aren't that aggressive in our parts but falcons are pretty bold. Any bird of prey would have landed on his back and not tore up the neck and face like that. Not normally anyway. Looks dog like...it maybe couldnt get back through the fence with it and got scared off. So sorry for your loss.

If the whole area that your ducks are in is protected with that kind of a fence it almost has to be a bird of prey of some kind. Unless it was a raccoon. I've heard they can fit through very small openings and I've seen them around here even during the day.

Even though my entire run is covered on the top my ducks know when a hawk or falcon is scoping them out. My Daisy was undercover and a falcon still swooped in under that roof and killed him. It's just a risk you take when you leave the top uncovered.

Was it a day or night attack? Owls eat the heads off of ducks and some do hunt during the day, as do some night creatures in the summer months. I think I read once, too, opossums will try to eat a duck's head. It looks like the attack was interrupted and the predator fled or flew off.
