Hi all, could you help me out?
I've started a incubator running at with only its own thermometer at 37.5C. I checked with three other thermometers (one digital without probe, one analogue (bimetal) without probe and one human oral thermometer). All are not able to get calibrated through conventional methods. They all gave different temperatures, as usual with these problems haha
Then suddenly a family member of mine showed some big big tumor in her abdomen on ultrasound imaging, so I had other things to think of besides verifying and deciding which thermometer to trust.
By that time, I received the 24 quail eggs through mail (which I paid a lot for because coturnix japonica quail are not common in my country) and decided to give it a shot with using the incubator's thermometer only (stupid).
At day 7 I candled the eggs and half of em showed veins/something, in some of them i even saw a beating heart I think or maybe it was a moving embryo.
Happily my sister has got an emergency surgery and the tumor appears to be benign.
Now its day 15 (if we count the first day as day 1, or should I start with 0?). So lockdown day.
And now I realise that even though they all gave different temperatures, they were all much lower (32-34C) than the incub thermometer. At least I should have picked the highest one among the three to be on the safe side.
The baby eggs are still doing fine I think.
I now decided to not use the incubators thermometer at all and up the temperature until the two show an average of 36.6C (+- 1C gives a safe zone of 35.6-37-6C I hope). Then, I let the human thermometer sit in for at least 15 minutes before turning on: it now showed 37.7C, which could be most accurate, thus perfect.
Now what should I do? Probably they'll hatch much later.
Tomorrow I'll candle again. What should I do if they're all again on a different stage?
I've read a lot of older threads so came to next conclusion:
- Turning is no problem, so I could delay going into lockdown as long as I keep the humidity high and check for pips.
- lower temp is better than higher temp. Ideal 37.2-37.8C. T 36.1C is still acceptable.
Could anyone confirm if this is a sound plan? Any better ideas?
(Ps first time incubating. Bought an $80 hdd incubator with automatic turning)
