Hi everybody! I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem with their chicken. For the last few days my hen is big, slow, walks in pain, cannot jump and barely eats. I noticed that one of her feet is bigger than the other, and that she can barely stand on it. I brought her in for an Epson salt bath and I couldn’t see any sign that would cause her foot to be bigger. I tried to research similar issues online, but nothing seems to match. I sprayed her feet with anti-bacterial spray and repeated the process for 5 days. On the fourth day, her appetite had returned and she was more mobile, able to jump, but her foot still looks swollen. She stands most of the time with her tail down.

A bit of background information, this hen for 4 weeks last year was very weak. She could barely eat, couldn’t jump and was puffy. I took her to the vet that took a poo sample and x-rays and found nothing wrong. The vet could not identify what was the issue. After a month, the hen’s appetite returned and she was able to jump. However, she has not layed an egg since and her poo is always liquidy.

We have 3 other hens and none of the others are experiencing any issues. All of them are 2 years old.

If anyone has an idea what it could be or what I should check it would be very appreciated. Thanks!

it sounds like she's experiencing multiple issues. from my experience, sluggish movement, classic "puffed up" & tail down sick hen posture, runny poop & no eggs usually means she's egg bound.

the swollen foot was probably bumblefoot, but it sounds like your treatment for it is working & you just need more time for the swelling to completely go down.

i would recommend looking into symptoms & treatment of egg binding, especially if your hen is a hybrid layer type like an isa brown. a course of antibiotics also wouldn't hurt.
